Bull PathPerched at the high point of a gently sloping, wooded site in East Hampton, this 3,600 square foot home is comprised of two bars, set perpendicular to each other, forming a ‘L’. The single story, entry component acts as a threshold for passage into the house at one end and outdoor living spaces at the other. This volume contains an open plan foyer, mudroom, kitchen and dining. The two story component is the more private, family wing of bedrooms, baths and den. These two wings cradle a 1 ½ story living room at their intersection. This living room expands in section by the use of a slightly raised ceiling that enables a view above the tree line and a sunken floor level that follows the slope of the site. Recognizing the ‘activity’ level of two twin boys, the owners requested a circulation strategy that would accommodate a high level of traffic between indoor (mudroom, kitchen, dining and den) and outdoor (patios, pool and grounds) spaces that would take “the heat” while allowing for the living room to be central to their lives, focus on view of their property and provide a peaceful respite. A refined palette of dark stained cedar, stone and glass will provide a durable yet elegant composition of materials. Construction to begin Spring 2008.
