Sagg Main BarnThe components of this Sagaponack, NY project consist of the original barn (which has been recently moved from its original location on the property and remained ‘up on blocks’ awaiting a final location) a former stable, chicken coop and work shed. Located on the crest of an elevated, flagged lot, the site possesses both a sense of privacy and expanse. An Architectural Master Plan was first developed to allow for immediate occupancy on the site within the outbuilding compound while the design and construction for Phase 2 – the conversion of the existing barn into the primary residence - took place. The first step in the site design was to relocate the existing entry drive to the perimeter of the property, lining the side of this drive with privet hedge which is interrupted at points to allow for specific views of the property, across a newly planted meadow. Without altering the footprints of the group of outbuildings, guest quarters, spa, sauna, tennis court and outdoor fire pit were designed as a recreation/visitor compound with the owner occupying the guest quarters through construction of the residence. The architectural plan for the barn began with the rotation of the structure 90 degrees in order for the broad side to face south, towards the meadow. The center portion of the barn is conceived as a large, informal, ‘great room’, delineated by a two story, glass, window wall. Dining room and den flank either side of the great room with kitchen, storage and a master suite with private outdoor patio occupying the other side of the ground floor. Children’s bedrooms are on the second floor, dormered for additional space and light. A raised stone patio, outdoor dining cabana and pool with an infinity edged corner, which would double as one wall of the entry stair were designed as transitional elements between the house and landscape, adhering to the overarching intent of this design to connect the owners with their land. Views stretch across the site, daylight is maximized and paths of travel pull you into the landscape rather than keeping it at arms length.
